Young People’s Concerts, or “YPCs” as we like to call them, are performed for area third through eighth grade students every fall and winter, reaching approximately 13,000 students and teachers each year. These 40-minute programs feature the full Wichita Symphony Orchestra and often utilize actors or dancers to illustrate the program. For many students, these fun and educational concerts are their first experience with live symphonic music!

Classical Kids Live!
Wichita Symphony Orchestra
Classical Kids Live! joins the WSO to tell the story of Tchaikovsky’s arrival in New York for the grand opening of Carnegie Hall in 1891 and his famous trip to Niagara Falls, based on the actual historical event. A surprise encounter with a young American girl, Jennie, reveals much about Tchaikovsky – his life in Russia, his love of music, and his fears of conducting. This is a poignant story of the meeting of old world influences and new world experiences; a tale of contrast, courage, and classical music.
Audiences will enjoy more than twenty-five excerpts of the composer’s music including passages from his three famous ballets - The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake - The 1812 Overture, First Piano Concerto, and String Serenade. The music is magically woven into the drama as two actors recreate historical incidents from the composer’s life and dance story passages from his famous ballets.

PROJECT Trio
The Wichita Symphony brings the eclectic chamber ensemble PROJECT Trio back to Century II! Combining the virtuosity of world-class artists with the energy of rock stars, PROJECT Trio is breaking down traditional ideas of chamber music with a flutist known for his ‘beatboxing’ technique, a double bassist, and a saxophonist.
With specialized curricula for different age groups, PROJECT Trio’s programs are adapted to meet the National Standards for Music Education. Students attending these concerts will experience a variety of musical styles, have an opportunity to engage interactively with the Trio, and learn the art and joy of jamming on classical instruments, seeing what instruments can do.

In fall of 2021, the Wichita Symphony premiered a piece by film composer George S. Clinton called Old Cowtown Suite. The piece, inspired by Wichita's own Old Cowtown Museum, was written specifically for the Wichita Symphony, and is a true love letter to the city and history of Wichita. Just as composer George S. Clinton was inspired by Cowtown, the Wichita Symphony was so inspired by this piece of music that they made it the centerpiece for their second Virtual Young People's Concert. The resulting film pairs video of the Wichita Symphony captured performing live in the Concert Hall with cinematic footage captured at Old Cowtown Museum and beyond. Watch as the players are transported back in time to the Chisholm Trail of the 1880s in this short film that's perfect for students and parents alike!
